Tiny robots revolutionise surgery

Small robots designed by University of Nebraska researchers may allow doctors on Earth to help perform surgery on patients in space.

Less than 8cm tall, these tiny-wheeled robots — slipped into the abdomen and controlled by surgeons hundreds of kilometres away — are in the pipeline at the University of Nebraska Medical Centre and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Deskloops

Here is another windows arrangement program called deskloops. It arranges the opened windows like a virtual loop so that you can scroll through it. You can scroll by right clicking at screen edge or choosing from film strip which automatically show/hide at the top of screen.

One thing I like is that it doesn't take much memory. You know my old PC is quite sensitive for Memory and CPU usage. But it runs well on my PC.

I don't know. May be we might not need this. But it’s cool to have that. At least you should try this coz you can get it for free.

... And Justice For All

I just feel that I must speak out on this issue. Burma and its luck of Justice… You must have seen such kind of events in movies about historical stories during age of empires or dark ages. But it is still happening in Burma.

Let’s imagine you are watching such kind of movie. You see people are forced to work under the weapons of rulers. Some people are starving, some people are sick, some people are old but they all were forced to work. (of course leaving their own earning works.)

Ma Su Su Nwae who is suffering from heart disease and Ko Aung Zin Moe, whose wife is about to give birth to a child requested for exemption from the work which they were forced to. But they were threatened to be arrested.

So they, reported to ILO about that and started a lawsuit against local authority. Local court though they did not want to accept the case, accepted due to ILO’s request and arrested the village authorities. (Actually, village authorities were not the ones who made this forced labor. Army did that!!!)

(from NDD WINC issue 183)

After this lawsuit, local authorities created a fake accusation to Ma Su Su Nwae and after a long trial, they sentenced her to one and half years in jail.
This is the animosity of a government towards it’s own citizen.

The Island

I watched "the Island" yesterday.

The movie stole ideas from "The Matrix".

1) The way they grow people. Even the way they take out the grown up human from the pod is the same. (okay.. they might argue that this is the way to grow human in theory.)
2) The scene where the bots are inserted is exactly the same with the scene when agent Smith inserts a bug into Neo.
3) finally...
In Matrix... "I am Neo"
In Island... "I am Lincoln"

ha ha ha shameless copies.

Technology is very much advanced in that era. But the motorbike like that will not fly in reality.
island
I don't understand why mini-bots came out when urinate. (with the technology at that time described, these should be nanobots which can be simply injected into blood vessel. They will be able to trevel even into the head. Now the bots in the movie are quite big. The scene in the movie is just to horrify the audience.)

Anyway, it is a good movie to watch. I recommend you. The chase scene is awesome.
Annnnnnnd. The actress, Scarlett Johansson, is very beautiful in this movie.

Surface tension

From Visions of Science photographic awards:

Einstein Year Award: 1st Prize
Surface tension

clip

by Robert Anderson

The surface tension of water can support even a metal paperclip. By photographing it using a grill in front of the light source, the deformation of the water caused by the clip's weight can be seen. This bending of light is similar to the bending of light by strong gravitational fields, as predicted by Einstein's theories. Surface tension is due to an attraction between the molecules in water, which cause its surface to act in an elastic manner.

Musical breasts

he he don't think wrong, this is just a funny technology.

Musical breasts
From the article:

Breast enhancements need not only be about looks and sex appeal. They could soon have a functional purpose too.
A company is currently developing a microchip that stores music files and can be built into a breast implant, the Sun reports.
BT Futurology apparently intend on developing a musical double act for the bosoms, which would see an MP3 player installed in one mammary, and music files in the other.
The whole ensemble could then be managed via Bluetooth wireless technology.
Company analyst Ian Pearson said: "It is now very hard for me to think of breast implants as just decorative.
"If a woman has something implanted permanently, it might as well do something useful."

Myanmar Unicode - Correction

I messed up. Coz I didn’t do my homework and talked. smile

Now I learnt that "Myanmar1" is the only font which complies with Unicode standard

Actually, myanmar1 font renders the mendials (ya-pint, ya-yit) with the combination of a-thet, , and ya ( ယ and ရ ) respectively. က+ ္+ရ = က္ရ . And subscripts also do the same thing. a-thet,  , and letter itself.
For “Mandalay”, မ+န+ ္ +တ+ ေလး = မန္တလေး. This is the linguistic approach for mendials and subscripts. For normal   ္‌ they add zero width non-joiner (200C)
no no, I’m not saying that u gotta type like that. Truetype Open font will automatically do it for you. .

from myanmar uni pdf

” does a beautiful trick here. It is arranged to be typed after consonant coz Unicode standard states that vowels are stored after the consonant. But I think, it is also useful for line braking. For word processing, Myanmar do not have space between words for line brakes. First method is to regard as a break before consonant. Now ya-yit and “” come after consonant not like before. Looks like it is solved. But there are more to consider. Read this pdf file for detail

Myanmar Unicode - ya-yit

Since mystery of ya-yit in “myanmar1” font I discussed fascinated me, I tried to find the ya-yit in character set of myanmar1. Eventually I found that there is no ya-yit at all. Instead, “Ya” and “a-thet” combined to form ya-yit. Like this: for “kya” and “cha”, က   ္   ရ ခ   ္   ရ. I put spaces between these characters to split them. If I remove spaces, they combined again to render as ya-yit.
Now, getting more mysterious.

Myanmar Unicode - continued

So… Let me continue my Unicode story.

Yesterday, after I wrote the update on my previous post, I found this post by Waipyo and also Lynn seck emailed me about this site

Advantages of this keyboard installer is that it is quite smart for ya-yit.  first, I can type as I write (i.e. first ka and later ya-yit) and second, the size of ya-yit is automatically chosen. And also act a bit strangely.

Disadvantages: font myanmar1 does not include subscript characters. Lots of spaces in character map are left blank. I can’t even type “Mandalay”, မႎၨေလး. Check this if you want to know how many characters we need.

And some characters are different from other unicode fonts like Myazedi, BIT and UniBurma.
I think Myazedi, BIT and UniBurma are better. ohhh I'm confused. Give me a standard and complete one.

Myanmar Unicode typing tool

Ok... Let's talk about Burmese Unicode.

For not having a keyboard to type Burmese in Unicode, I made a typing page last week . Though is is not smart, it must be useful to some instance. (Please... I'm not a computer guy.) But I will also try to make it accept keyboard input later.  I promise. :)

BTW, i'd talked about this here (in comments) and here before. As I said there, ponNya_web and keyman worked somehow. But the character set is different.

Yesterday, I found this project on sourceforge. I tried it and it works. So go there and download fonts and keyboard installer. First install fonts then install the KB. After that do as instructed in readme file. [For WIN XP... Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Language Tab > Details > English(United States) > Add/Remove > Myanmar(Burmese) After that, from lower left button... language bar> show language bar on desktop] . That's it.

UPDATE: @ Wednesday, October 20, 2005.
When i check that site today, the developer has removed the downloads for further development. You can read explanation here. If you want to download, I'd put them here. coz it is redistributable under GNU General Public License.

Free your mind

While I'm using Matrix BG, I want to post quotations from movie. I'd mad a fan site these days but just a few people visited there.

Neo: But if you already know, how can I make a choice?
The Oracle: Because you didn't come here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand why you made it.

The Oracle: We're all here to do what we're all here to do. I'm interested in one thing, Neo, the future. And believe me, I know - the only way to get there is together.
Neo: Are there other programs like you?
The Oracle: Oh, well, not like me. But... Look, see those birds? At some point a program was written to govern them. A program was written to watch over the trees, and the wind, the sunrise, and sunset. There are programs running all over the place. The ones doing their job, doing what they were meant to do, are invisible. You'd never even know they were here. But the other ones, well, we hear about them all the time.
Neo: I've never heard of them.
The Oracle: Of course you have. Every time you've heard someone say they saw a ghost, or an angel. Every story you've ever heard about vampires, werewolves, or aliens is the system assimilating some program that's doing something they're not supposed to be doing.
Neo: Programs hacking programs. Why?
The Oracle: They have their reasons, but usually a program chooses exile when it faces deletion.

Read more here AND Site entrance is here. (there may be some pop-ups at that site. sorry about that. I had a difficult time finding free web host these days)

Your mobile phone will know how you walk

Mobile phones talk the talk, will soon walk the walk
From the article:

Finnish researchers presented new technology designed to prevent thefts of mobile phones and laptops, using biometrics to recognize the gait of the device's owner. A sensor-based so-called "gaitcode" embedded in the device registers and memorizes the movements of the owner in three-dimensional form, and is reliable in 90 percent of cases, the researchers said Thursday.

If it does not recognize the walk, it asks for a password. If given an incorrect password, the device automatically locks itself down.

I hate realPlayer

Damn!!!! I hate realPlayer. I boycotted it since three years ago. If a video or sound clip on web needs real player, i just leave it without watching. You know that player is so greedy. It registers all media files types on my pc and run whenever i click on those files. I changed those files types to be handled by my favorite player but later it changed it back. It also comes up whenever i put a media CD. If I remember correctly it also forced to stay in system tray at startup. I don't like Its user interface and it displays too much advertisements. In the end I had to uninstall it.

Why am I  talking this? Because they are still greedy. They sued Microsoft for bundling media player into Windows OS. The deal would include Microsoft paying cash ($761-million) as well as advertising for Real services and Real will obtain long-term access to Windows Media technologies to enhance Real’s media software solutions.
Ohhh shameless realplayer.

OS on a floppy

This very small OS called MenuetOS is so small that it can fit into a floppy disk which we can call it live diskette. One important fact is that it is not based on any kind of Unix or Linux kernel. It was written from scratch. Though I couldn't access my HD, GUI is quite impressive for such a small one. You should take a look. Ohhh... come on!!! please don't say you don't have floppy drive.!!![via]
