Drowning Burma

I want to continue my previous post some more. (coz I'm quite furious with it.)  There are a couple of controversial dam projects around the world such as Pak Mun damKalabagh DamIlisu Dam, Three Gorges Dam, and Narmada Dam.
But I think Salween dam projects are the worst. Since these dams will be very large mega dams, flooded area will be very large and it will damage the ecosystem terribly. It will also displace a large number of people. But output electricity will be transferred to Thai. Water from dams will be diverted to the Chao Praya basin, to be used in industrial operations in Thailand.

So, Burma will be left with sufferings. There will be no turning back.

Previously, china also had plan to build 13 dams along Salween River (Nujiang) but, later, on April 1, 2004, the Chinese premier halted the construction.

But Burmese generals are very ready to sell Salween.

The Prejudice Map

The Prejudice Map is about how nationalities around the world are known for.
They made it using query like ""germans are known for *". I searched for "Burmese". Oops… some results are for cats. :D Then i tried with the word "Myanmar". Not quite good. Got just a few results from travel agencies.
Someone in this forum has searched for all South East Asian neighbors. Some are quiet weird. ;-)

Damn the dam

Do you think hydroelectric power is environmental friendly?
Not really. Because Hydroelectric power used to come along with notorious dams.

Now, Burmese military regime and Thai government are planning to build several large dams along Salween river. Actually, Thai gov is not going to build any large dam more in their country due to environmental impacts. So, they are planning to build dams in Burma and get hydroelectric out of them. And not only electric they will get, they will also redirect water from dams to Thai’s large lakes and river with canals.

Burma stupid generals just know how to get money. They do not consider how much damage will be caused by these large dams to the country. The environmental damage cannot be changed back once happened.  Once these dams are built, Burma will suffer from these dams eternally.

salween dam site

Dams cause several serious problems.

People in that region will be forcibly evicted from their lands to make way for dams. Evidence shows that these people have often been left economically, culturally and psychologically devastated.

The ecosystem of the whole region will be damaged completely.

An un-dammed river is dynamic, always changing and comprised of many different ecological niches (specific place or role an organism has in its ecosystem). Ecosystems and cultures are dependent on this dynamism. Large dams will destroy the delicate balance between the river and its watershed, a relationship, which may have taken many thousands of years to evolve. [source]

There are lots of factors more on this environmental issue. It will lead to deforestation and erosion due to flooding and after effects. All river animals and land animals in Salween region will face extinction again affecting the ecosystem. You can read the complete explanation about environmental damage such as Flooding, Physical changes, Loss of species, Climate, Disease, Water Diversion and more at this page. [salweenwatch.org]  .

Actually, last week’s issue of  NDD WINC #237 made me write this. Read the complete document in pdf format here.

Validate Google's Markup

slashdot discussion pointed out that Google search page does not pass W3C validation. Google.com has 51 errors. I'm sure that http://www.google.com/ is the page people use most on earth. So, it is just a small page with 51 errors. What a shame.

I'm getting curious and checked for Yahoo search. Yahoo has 49 errors.

Now, I'm getting more curious. I checked for MSN search.
OMG!!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!!!! MSN passed the validation. It is XHTML 1.0 Strict.

Recovering Scratchted CDs

Everybody knows that CDs are not robust at all. I even do not want to lend it to someone. Whenever I lend CD, it never comes back to me safely. I don’t know why they do not manufacture it with casing like 3.5 diskettes. I think “Blu-ray Disc” will be in casing like that.

Anyway, if you have scratched CDs, here is the treatment. The treatment is polishing the CD with toothpaste using cotton swab. After clearing the scratches, wash the CD in water. Be careful when you polish. rub in radial direction (going from the center outward).

Image Effect Javascript

I think the image effect in "Union day" post must be interesting for some people. My friend, Mayvelous, asked about that and she also has a post about “LightBox JS” on her blog. So, I think it would be helpful if I post about the script I used here too.

The use of this effect is that you wanna put big image on ur page but it would mess up your layout or it would load big image against user’s will. So, what do we do? We put small thumbnail and link it to high-resolution image. Not quite cool. You gotta click the thumbnail. Look the image. Hit the back button. Wait for page loading again. No good!!!! That’s not rock n’ roll.

Ok… whatever… no more blah blah blah.

Here is the demo with Mandy Moore image. ;-)

Here is the script.

CSS
<style>
<!--
img.small_to_large {
  border-width:0;
}

img.small_to_largelarge {
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    z-index: 1;
    display: none;
    border: 1px solid #3366cc;
}

div.small_to_large {
    position: relative;
    overflow: visible;
}
-->
</style>

HTML (place the following where you wanna see your image.)
<div class="small_to_large">
<a href="javascript:return(void)" onmouseover="document.large_img_mandy.style.display='block';">
<img src="http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/5032/mandywall6vv.th.jpg" alt="Mandy Moore" name="img_img" class="small_to_large" />
</a>

<a href="javascript:return(void)" onmouseout="document.large_img_mandy.style.display='none';">
<img src="http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/5032/mandywall6vv.jpg" alt="Mandy Moore" name="large_img_mandy" class="small_to_largelarge" />
</a>
</div>

Replace the yellow text accordingly.
Here…
mandywall6vv.th.jpg is thumbnail image
mandywall6vv.jpg is big image
large_img_mandy is element name.

Union Day and Panglong Agreement

Today is the Union Day of Burma. 59 years ago, on this day, general Aung San and leaders from ethnic groups of Burma gathered at Panglong and signed the historic agreement called Panglong Agreement. Generally, they agreed to cooperate with Burmese government so that federation of partially self-governing states can be formed.

THE PANGLONG AGREEMENT

Dated Panglong, the 12th
February 1947

THE PANGLONG AGREEMENT, 1947

A conference having been held at Panglong, attended by certain Members of the Executive Council of the Governor of Burma, all Saohpas and representative of the Shan States, the Kachin Hills and the Chin Hills:

The Members of the conference, believing that freedom will be more speedily achieved by the Shans, the Kachins and the Chins by their immediate co-operation with the Interim Burmese Government:

  • A Representative of the Hill Peoples, selected by the Governor on the recommendation of representatives of the Supreme Council of the United Hill Peoples (SCOUHP), shall be appointed a Counsellor for Frontier Areas shall be given executive authority by similar means.
  • The said Counsellor shall also be appointed a Member of the Governor's Executive Council, without portfolio, and the subject of Frontier Areas brought within the purview of the Executive Council by Constitutional Convention as in the case of Defence and External Affairs. The Counsellor for Frontier Areas shall be given executive authority by similar means.
  • The said Counsellor shall be assisted by two Deputy Counsellors representing races of which he is not a member. While the two Deputy Counsellors should deal in the first instance with the affairs of their respective areas and the Counsellor with all the remaining parts of the Frontier Areas, they should by Constitutional Convention act on the principle of joint responsibility.
  • While the Counsellor, in his capacity of Member of the Executive Council, will be the only representative of the Frontier Areas on the Council, the Deputy Counsellors shall be entitled to attend meetings of the Council when subjects pertaining to the Frontier Areas are discussed.
  • Though the Governor's Executive Council will be augmented as agreed above, it will not operate in respect of the Frontier Areas in any manner which would deprive any portion of those Areas of the autonomy which it now enjoys in internal administration. Full autonomy in internal administration for the Frontier Areas is accepted in principle.
  • Though the question of demarcating and establishing a separated Kachin State within a Unified Burma is one which must be relegated for decision by the Constituent Assembly, it is agreed that such a State is desirable. As a first step towards this end, the Counsellor for Frontier Areas and the Deputy Counsellors shall be consulted in the administration of such areas in the Myitkyina and the Bhamo Districts as are Part II Scheduled Areas under the Government of Burma Act of 1935.
  • Citizens of the Frontier Areas shall enjoy rights and privileges which are regarded as fundamental in democratic countries.
  • The arrangements accepted in this Agreement are without prejudice to the financial autonomy now vested in the Federated Shan States.
  • The arrangements accepted in this Agreement are without prejudice to the financial assistance which the Kachin Hills and the Union Hills are entitled to receive from the revenues of Burma, and the Exeutive Council will examine with the Frontier Areas Counsellor and Deputy Counsellors the feasibility of adopting for the Kachin Hills and the Chin Hills financial arrangement similar to those between Burma and the Federated Shan States.
  • Shan Committee. Kachin Committee. Burmese Government.

    Triple six uprising

    I’ve been browsing a blog called  Burmadigest, written by some activists . It is a blog with many contributors, awesome articles and rapid updating. And, this is the first blog I found written by Burmese activists. (btw, I do not want to call Burmese pro-democracy activists as politicians. Coz the words like politics and politician give different sense. ) Anyway, there are some posts of them I found good to highlight here.

    After 8888 uprising (8-8-1988), people tried to plan another uprising on 9-9-1999 to bring down military regime. But 9999 campaign (or 99999) didn’t happen. Now, there is another call for uprising, triple six uprising, to be made on 6th June, 2006. Actually, Dr. Salai Tun Than’s plan is also set to begin at the end of May. I believe. Triple six will happen.

    Gates vs. Jobs

    Computer geeks hate Bill Gates but love Steve Jobs. That’s what I couldn’t understand for long time. If you compare Windows and Linux, Yes, you are right. But… what about Apple??? (hey. .. don’t say OS X is partially open. It just came out a couple of years ago.) Macintosh is not open source. Even the hardware is closed technology. No Apple clone. But. . . people love to hate Gates and praising Jobs. People are advertising iPod for free. (hey . . .but note that I do not say I hate Jobs and Apple btw. I know their products are cool and expensive.)

    So, let’s be neutral. Let’s look two guys who is spending their wealth on humanitarian works.

    Gates is giving away his fortune with the same gusto he spent acquiring it, throwing billions of dollars at solving global health problems. He has also spoken out on major policy issues, for example, by opposing proposals to cut back the inheritance tax.

    In contrast, Jobs does not appear on any charitable contribution lists of note. And Jobs has said nary a word on behalf of important social issues, reserving his talents of persuasion for selling Apple products.

    Prior to the Pixar acquisition, Jobs was worth approximately US$3.3 billion. Now, Pixar alone is worth US$3.7 billion to Jobs, who is the 194th richest man in the world. Still, aside from the possibility that Jobs may be giving to charity anonymously, his name is absent from a list created by the Giving USA Foundation which lists donors who have given more than US$5 million over the last four years. His name is also missing from a list created by Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy which tracks those who have given at least US$1 million in gifts. Although The Steve is absent from the lists, his wife has given large monetary donations to the Democratic political party through the years. [source]

    Please read the following two articles. It’s worth reading both. [links via /.]

    Gates vs. Jobs: who is the good guy?
    Jobs vs. Gates: Who's the Star?

    I just can’t understand why damn rich people living their lives spending money like water while part of the world is starving. On MTV, there are shows about celebrities and daughters of rich people. They are just showing off their properties and how they waste money and having fun at extravagance parties. Whenever I see them, I want to puke.
